Ocean Scout under full sailWe operate primarily from Ipswich on the UK east coast throughout the sailing season, but our annual programme also includes summer voyages that take our vessels further afield and right across Europe. Our administrative headquarters are at Tolken in West Mersea, Essex, where our small team of office staff are based and handle the administration of the organisation.

However, as a charity we rely heavily on the support of a team of dedicated volunteers, who undertake a wide variety of shore-based roles in addition to expert sailing tuition. All of our senior afterguard (our instructors) are experienced, professionally qualified sailors who give up their time on a voluntary basis. There are also many “behind the scenes” shore-based tasks that are key to the smooth running of the organisation that are undertaken by volunteers; everything from the purchasing of food and running the website, to the maintenance of our two vessels.

We are part of the worldwide Scout movement and fit into the UK scouting structure as a Scout District within Essex Scouts. We are also active members of UK Sail Training/Association of Sea Training Organisations (ASTO) and a recognised RYA Training Centre, which enables us to offer training towards a range of widely recognised sailing qualifications. The charity is managed by the board of trustees, who work alongside the operations committee that oversees the day to day running of the organisation.
