Adventures Offshore strives to operate to the highest standard of safety possible and our excellent safety record demonstrates how successful we are with that aim. Although we are a charity, we are required to operate to the commercial standards set down by the MCA. As part of Scouting, we are also required to abide by the rules of the Scout Association. Shortly after your arrival on board our yachts, you will be receive a full safety briefing from our afterguard and be allocated a lifejacket with harness and waterproofs for the duration of your voyage.

Boat safety equipment

Our boats are certified in accordance with the Safety Code for Small Commercial Sailing Vessels and inspected annually. Both of our boats carry all the safety equipment required by law, and more. This includes the following:

Inflatable lifejacket for everyone on board, with crotch strap and in built harness

Specialist waterproof clothing for everyone on board

Two deck-mounted life-rafts with a total capacity of 14

Full-length jack-stays

Two horseshoe-type floats with light

Dan buoy with light & flag

Throwing lines

Helicopter strop

Boat hooks

Emergency steering equipment

Radar

Radar reflector

VHF radio with DSC linked to GPS

Backup GPS

Hand-held radio

EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon)

Emergency lighting

First aid kits

A full set of distress flares

White collision warning flares

Spotlight

Wire rigging cutters

Electric & manual bilge pumps

Emergency lighting

At least one fire extinguisher per cabin

Fire blanket in the galley

Gas detectors

In addition to the above equipment, we have a comprehensive set of Operational Procedures which we abide to at all times.

Afterguard qualifications

Our boats are run by experienced and professionally qualified (albeit volunteer) skippers and mates. A fully qualified skipper and first mate are present on all voyages; whilst on longer trips there will also be a qualified second mate. There is often also a trainee mate on board, who will assist the skipper and qualified mate in the running of the boat.

All skippers hold a minimum of a commercially endorsed RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore qualification, whilst mates are qualified to at least RYA Coastal Skipper standard. The commercial endorsement means that the skipper and mate have attended first aid and sea survival courses, and have passed a medical examination.

In addition to having the necessary formal qualifications, our afterguard have received training specific to our boats and operating procedures. There is an ongoing assessment and review process. All of our afterguard members must pass CRB checks prior to sailing with us.

Risk assessment

We undertake a regular risk assessment. You can view it here.
