Experience the excitement & adventure of offshore sailing

Many of our sailing volunteers join us having originally sailed as crew, but shown an interest in developing their skills further. We operate a trainee mate scheme to assist volunteers in gaining sailing experience and qualifications, in order that they can eventually qualify as a mate.

Once accepted as a trainee mate, you will be expected to commit to attending a training weekend and a small number of winter refit sessions. You will also be encouraged to take up a trainee berth on voyages throughout the season, which will enable you to gain hands on experience and familiarise yourself with our boats.

Committed volunteers will be supported whilst they are progressing through professional sailing qualifications. Once you have achieved the necessary qualifications and have suitable experience, you will then be able to progress to qualified first mate status.

But this really is only the beginning! We encourage our volunteers to make the most of the opportunities on offer, sailing both in the UK and on longer voyages overseas. With further experience and qualifications under your belt, ultimately you may be able to skipper one of our yachts on sail training voyages.
